TopRatedSoftware did not operate a malware-testing laboratory, execute ransomware samples, or measure detection rates for this article. When we reference protection scores, those figures originate from reports published by the named testing organization and are attributed accordingly. Our role is to interpret and contextualize those results, not to reproduce them. The 4.8 rating reflects Bitdefender's unusually consistent lab record, low measured system overhead in published benchmarks, broad feature coverage across tiers, and competitive introductory pricing. It does not mean the product will stop every future threat, that its VPN replaces a dedicated service, or that every feature available on Windows exists in identical form on macOS, iOS, or Android. Buyers with platform-specific requirements should verify the feature matrix on Bitdefender's comparison page before purchase. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from published AV-Test/AV-Comparatives reports, vendor documentation, and pricing pages. No TopRatedSoftware malware-lab result is claimed. ### Independent lab standing and detection approach Bitdefender's Windows engine has earned AV-Test's "Top Product" designation across multiple consecutive evaluation periods, typically achieving 6/6 scores in the Protection, Performance, and Usability categories. AV-Comparatives has also placed Bitdefender among its top-rated products in both the Real-World Protection and Malware Protection tests, awarding Advanced+ ratings. These scores reflect controlled laboratory conditions using curated sample sets and standardized hardware; real-world results on a given machine depend on configuration, user behavior, update cadence, and the constantly evolving threat landscape. Under the hood, Bitdefender uses a combination of signature matching, heuristic analysis, machine-learning classifiers, and a behavioral monitor called Advanced Threat Defense. The behavioral layer watches running processes for suspicious patterns and can terminate and quarantine them. Ransomware Remediation adds a rollback capability: if a process encrypts files before being flagged, the engine can restore them from protected backup copies. This is a valuable safety net, but it is not a guarantee against every ransomware variant, particularly those that target boot records or use novel evasion techniques. ### System impact and daily performance Published AV-Test performance benchmarks have consistently placed Bitdefender among the least resource-intensive suites on Windows, showing minimal impact on application launch times, file copy operations, and web browsing during background protection. AV-Comparatives' performance tests have reached similar conclusions. This matters because a security product that visibly slows a machine encourages users to disable it, undermining the protection it provides. Bitdefender's Autopilot mode is designed to make security decisions silently rather than presenting pop-up dialogs for every detection or scheduled task. For most non-expert users, this is the correct default: it reduces alert fatigue while still logging events for later inspection. Power users who prefer granular control can switch to manual profiles. Game, Movie, and Work profiles suppress notifications and defer non-critical scans to preserve foreground application performance. The practical effect is that Bitdefender can run on a moderately specified home machine without the user noticing it during normal tasks, though full on-demand scans of large drives will still consume CPU and I/O resources. ### Feature coverage across tiers Bitdefender sells four primary consumer tiers. Antivirus Plus covers Windows only with core malware defense, anti-phishing, a password manager, and the 200 MB/day VPN allowance. Internet Security adds a firewall, parental advisor, and anti-spam on Windows. Total Security extends coverage to macOS, iOS, and Android and adds device optimization tools. Premium Security bundles unlimited VPN traffic and priority support. Each step up raises the price, and the introductory rate on every tier increases at renewal, so buyers should compare the total cost of the first two billing cycles rather than the promotional headline alone. SafePay is a dedicated hardened browser for financial transactions, isolating banking sessions from potential keyloggers or screen-capture malware. Network threat prevention inspects traffic at the packet level to block exploit attempts before they reach the browser. Vulnerability assessment scans for missing OS patches, weak passwords, and insecure Wi-Fi settings. These features collectively make Bitdefender more than a scanner, but each has limits. SafePay does not protect against phishing on an unrelated browser tab. The VPN's daily cap on lower tiers makes it impractical for general browsing. And the password manager, while functional, is less full-featured than standalone alternatives like 1Password or Bitwarden. ### Pricing and renewal economics On 2026-10-21 Bitdefender's US site listed Antivirus Plus at $39.99 for the first year (regular price $69.99) for up to three devices, Total Security at $59.99 (regular $109.99) for five devices, Premium Security at $79.99 (regular $129.99) for five devices with unlimited VPN, and Ultimate Security at $89.99 (regular $159.99). These are introductory rates: the regular price, which applies at renewal, is roughly 60 to 85 percent higher, and exact checkout totals depend on country, device count, tax, active promotions, and whether the subscription auto-renews. A 30-day money-back policy is offered; it is not a free tier and is subject to the current refund terms. Bitdefender Free Edition offers real-time malware protection for Windows without charge or time limit, which is more generous than most competitors' free tiers. However, the free edition omits ransomware remediation, the firewall, SafePay, parental controls, the VPN allowance, multi-platform coverage, and priority support. It is a capable baseline scanner but not a replacement for a paid suite in a household with diverse devices and threat exposure. Buyers weighing Bitdefender against Norton 360 or Kaspersky should compare not only the first-year sticker price but also renewal cost, device allowance, bundled VPN terms, and identity-protection extras. > **Price context:** Pricing was checked on 2026-10-21 and can change by region, promotion, device count, tax, and renewal cycle. Renewal pricing is typically higher than the introductory rate. ### Who should choose Bitdefender Bitdefender is our top antivirus recommendation for most home users because its combination of consistently high independent lab scores, low system overhead, layered ransomware defense, and reasonable introductory pricing is difficult to match across a single product. Autopilot makes it particularly suitable for households where not every member is comfortable managing security software, while the advanced behavioral engine and exploit prevention satisfy more demanding users. The free edition also provides a credible entry point for budget-conscious individuals who want core protection without commitment. It is not the ideal choice for every scenario. Users who need an unlimited VPN as part of their security suite may find Norton 360's bundled offering more practical than Bitdefender's 200 MB/day cap. Kaspersky often matches Bitdefender's lab scores, but it can no longer be sold to new US customers and its geopolitical situation may concern some buyers elsewhere. Mac and mobile users should verify that the specific features they need exist on their platform before committing, since the Windows product is the most complete. Our rating is based on published evidence and documented design, not a claim that any antivirus can guarantee protection against all present and future threats. ## Verdict Bitdefender earns our highest antivirus rating because its documented lab performance, low system impact, layered ransomware defense, and tiered pricing structure create the most balanced package for home users. Buy based on those published strengths, not on an assumption of invulnerability, and compare renewal pricing before committing. ## Alternatives - [Norton 360](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/norton) (4.7/5): Bundled unlimited VPN and identity-monitoring extras — From $39.99/yr introductory - [Kaspersky](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/kaspersky) (4.6/5): Comparable lab scores; not sold to new US customers — Not sold in the US ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware run malware tests on Bitdefender?** No. Protection scores cited in this review are from published AV-Test and AV-Comparatives reports. We interpreted those results but did not conduct independent malware-lab testing. **Is Bitdefender Free good enough?** The free edition provides real-time malware scanning on Windows without time limits, but it omits ransomware remediation, the firewall, SafePay, parental controls, multi-platform coverage, and VPN access. **Does Bitdefender include a VPN?** Yes, but the bundled VPN is limited to 200 MB/day on all tiers except Premium Security. For general-purpose VPN use, a dedicated service or the Premium tier is necessary. ## Sources - [AV-Test evaluation reports for Bitdefender](https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/) — Independent test results for Windows home-user products; Bitdefender has received consecutive Top Product designations. We compared Bitwarden’s current product documentation, published plan terms, platform release notes, privacy policy, and the public descriptions of independent assurance work available by October 13, 2026. Security language is therefore deliberately qualified: Bitwarden has undergone specific third-party audits, but those engagements address defined claims and scopes rather than proving every potential security or privacy issue will be covered. That distinction matters particularly for password manager reviews. A provider can document its architecture and an auditor can inspect defined controls, but neither proves how every future app build or server will behave under every condition. Our 4.8 rating reflects Bitwarden’s strong foundation, independent auditing history, open-source transparency, and competitive long-term pricing. It does not mean the product is risk-free, that an audit is permanent certification, or that a password manager can protect against all forms of digital threats. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from vendor documentation, published assurance information, release notes, and pricing pages; no TopRatedSoftware testing result is claimed. ### Privacy, ownership, and audit evidence Bitwarden implements a zero-knowledge architecture ensuring that company servers cannot access users' password data even if requested. Company retains basic account information like email and payment methods but deletes immediately upon account closure. The service underwent audits by ETH Zurich, Fracture Labs, and Palo Alto Networks, with all results publicly available to verify its security claims. The company’s transparency efforts include open-source code accessible for public scrutiny, with no data collection or selling practices. Bitwarden supports various authentication methods including biometric locks for mobile apps, which became available since 2022. All passwords are encrypted before reaching Bitwarden's servers, meaning even if an attacker accesses the server, they cannot view the encrypted information without the user’s password. Independent audits have assessed these security practices, confirming that Bitwarden upholds high standards across its service architecture, encryption methods, and user privacy. ### Features, platform support, and open-source transparency Bitwarden provides an extensive array of features across platforms, supporting desktops, mobile devices, and web browsers with cross-platform applications for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. The product supports password import from other services, browser extensions for major browsers, and integrates with various platforms. The free tier includes unlimited logins, notes, and card storage, with no device limit, making it particularly attractive for individual users and families. The open-source nature of Bitwarden enhances trust by allowing external review of code and security practices. The platform is self-hostable even on the free tier, which is beneficial for users wanting full control over their data. All passwords are encrypted before reaching Bitwarden's servers, enabling users to back up their vaults and offering protection through zero-knowledge encryption protocols. The service also supports multiple authentication methods including traditional passwords, two-factor authentication, biometric locks, security keys, and the ability to view exposed password breaches. ### Pricing and plan value as researched Bitwarden offers tiered plans with a free tier supporting unlimited logins, cards, and notes storage. The Premium plan costs $1.65 per month, billed annually at $19.80, and includes integrated authenticator feature, file attachments feature, emergency access feature, security reports feature, and the ability to share vault items with one other user. Families plan supports up to six users at $3.99 per month, billed annually at $47.88, including unlimited sharing, collections, organization storage, and 6 premium accounts. Teams and Enterprise plans provide advanced organizational features for larger groups, with Teams starting at $4 per user, billed annually, and Enterprise at $6 per user, billed annually. These higher-tier options offer granular access control, passwordless SSO integration, enterprise policies, automating provisioning with SCIM, and support for self-hosting infrastructure. A 30-day money-back guarantee on premium services provides users with flexibility to try the full feature set before committing. Pricing was checked in October 2026 and can change by region, tax, campaign, currency, term, and renewal cycle. The company's approach of offering substantial free functionality while allowing users to incrementally upgrade for additional features makes this password manager particularly appealing to those who want to start basic but may need more sophisticated capabilities over time. This pricing model helps justify the value proposition for both individuals and small organizations seeking robust password management that grows with their needs. Bitwarden has consistently focused on providing strong value through its various tiers, especially given that many premium features are available even in the free version for basic security needs. As the service continues to incorporate new features based on user feedback and industry trends, it remains competitive within the password manager market. ### Who should choose Bitwarden Bitwarden is an excellent choice for individuals and families who want to manage their passwords securely while maintaining privacy. It is particularly well-suited for users who value open-source transparency and don't require complex enterprise features. The free tier provides substantial functionality, making it accessible to a large user base. The comprehensive security features, including breach monitoring and two-factor authentication, provide additional protection over basic password management. It is not the best choice for enterprise-wide organizations requiring more intricate access controls or advanced identity management features currently in private preview. Users seeking full VPN capabilities or comprehensive security scanning may need to supplement Bitwarden. Also, the absence of certain team-level features in the free tier means that users might eventually outgrow its basic functionality without upgrading. For individuals, Bitwarden offers a cost-effective solution that balances strong security with usability across multiple platforms. Its zero-knowledge approach appeals to security-conscious users who want to maintain control over their personal data rather than trusting central servers with sensitive credentials. Families benefit from the ability to share vault items while maintaining overall control through individual accounts and security settings. The support for up to six users in the Families plan makes it practical for households with multiple people managing their credentials. ## Verdict Bitwarden offers a balanced set of features with excellent security, extensive platform support, and strong privacy practices that make it a top choice for individual users and families. Its zero-knowledge encryption, open-source foundations, and independent security audits have earned it significant trust among security-conscious consumers. ## Alternatives - [1Password](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/1password) (4.7/5): Another password manager we cover, with its own plans and apps - [LastPass](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/lastpass) (4.2/5): Strong team collaboration features and enterprise capabilities - [Dashlane](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/dashlane) (4.5/5): Intuitive user interface with good password generation tools ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test Bitwarden hands-on?** No. This is an expert-researched review built from the vendor documentation, pricing pages and independent sources listed below, not from our own tests. **Does Bitwarden have a free plan?** Yes. We compared NordVPN’s current product documentation, published plan terms, platform release notes, privacy policy, and the public descriptions of independent assurance work available by August 2, 2026. Performance language is therefore deliberately qualified: NordLynx is frequently reported as fast by specialist publications, but speed varies with the user’s line, Wi-Fi, distance, congestion, server selection, device, and protocol. No single third-party benchmark should be read as a guaranteed result. That distinction matters particularly for VPN reviews. A provider can document its architecture and an auditor can inspect defined controls, but neither proves how every future app build or server will behave under every condition. Our 4.8 rating reflects NordVPN’s unusually complete package, repeated no-logs assurance history, broad platform support, and competitive introductory pricing. It does not mean the product is risk-free, that an audit is permanent certification, or that a VPN makes a user anonymous against all forms of tracking. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from vendor documentation, published assurance information, release notes, and pricing pages; no TopRatedSoftware throughput or leak-test result is claimed. ### Privacy, ownership, and audit evidence NordVPN says it does not retain browsing activity, traffic destination, IP addresses used for a session, or connection timestamps in a way that can identify a customer’s activity. The strongest support for that statement is its history of external assurance engagements. PricewaterhouseCoopers reviewed the claim in 2018 and 2020; Deloitte performed later engagements, including the sixth assessment completed in late 2025 under ISAE 3000 (Revised). NordVPN says Deloitte examined relevant infrastructure, configurations, deployment processes, employees, and server types, including standard, Double VPN, obfuscated, and Onion Over VPN systems. The caveat is access. NordVPN makes the complete recent report available to signed-in customers rather than publishing the full technical document openly, so a prospective buyer may only see the provider’s public summary before subscribing. An assurance engagement also addresses a defined claim and period, not every conceivable security issue. Still, repeated reviews by established firms are more meaningful than an unsupported “no logs” badge. Panama is the stated contracting jurisdiction for the VPN service, but buyers should read the current privacy notice because account, payment, support, and fraud-prevention data are separate from VPN traffic logs. ### Protocols, infrastructure, and security tools NordLynx is NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol. WireGuard is valued for a compact codebase and modern cryptography, while NordVPN adds a double-NAT system intended to avoid storing an identifiable static address on the VPN server. OpenVPN remains available where compatibility or network policy makes it useful. The apps also include a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and auto-connect controls. Specialty locations include Double VPN, which adds a second VPN hop, and obfuscated servers intended for networks that interfere with ordinary VPN traffic. Those modes trade convenience or speed for a different threat model. NordVPN has moved its fleet toward colocated, RAM-oriented infrastructure and now publicly describes thousands of servers across more than 130 countries. Network totals change quickly, so we treat the provider’s live server page as the source of record rather than freezing a number that will soon be stale. Threat Protection Pro can block known malicious domains and trackers and can scan downloaded files, but it should complement rather than replace operating-system updates, browser protections, backups, and dedicated endpoint security where needed. Meshnet is a notable extra for linking approved devices or routing through a trusted personal machine. ### Apps, daily use, and performance expectations NordVPN supports the main desktop and mobile operating systems plus browsers, streaming devices, and compatible routers. The Windows 8.4 release line was the identifiable desktop version in the official release record reviewed for this article. Features are not perfectly identical across platforms: operating-system restrictions affect split tunneling, kill-switch behavior, background networking, and app-store billing. Buyers should confirm a must-have control on the exact platform they intend to use rather than assuming that a Windows feature exists on iOS or macOS in the same form. Independent VPN publications commonly place NordLynx among the faster mainstream options, which is technically plausible given WireGuard’s design, but we do not reproduce their speed numbers as our own. Nearby locations and wired connections usually provide the best conditions; distant routes, overloaded Wi-Fi, and multi-hop modes add overhead. For streaming, NordVPN advertises broad compatibility and SmartPlay-assisted routing. Catalog access remains a moving target because streaming services change detection systems and licensing rules. Treat access to any named library as a current capability to verify, not a lifetime contractual guarantee. ### Pricing and plan value as researched NordVPN now sells three tiers: Basic, Complete, and Prime. On 2026-10-21 the US pricing page, running a Black Friday campaign, listed Basic at $3.49 per month on a two-year plan with three extra months ($94.23 for the first 27 months, renewing at $139.08 per year), Complete at $3.99 per month ($107.73, renewing at $219.48 per year), and Prime at $6.99 per month ($188.73, renewing at $296.28 per year). All three cover ten devices. Complete adds antivirus, a password manager, data-breach monitoring, and 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage; Prime adds identity-protection services. Exact checkout totals vary with campaign, country, tax, currency, and extra months. A 30-day money-back policy is not the same thing as a free tier: payment is required and refund eligibility remains governed by the current terms. Compare the total charged today and the disclosed renewal amount, not only the oversized effective monthly figure. Introductory VPN offers often cover two years and then renew on a shorter cycle at a higher annualized cost. NordVPN can be excellent value for someone who will use the specialty servers, Meshnet, and web protections, but the more expensive bundles are less compelling if a buyer already has a password manager and cloud storage. Calendar a reminder before renewal, retain the checkout disclosure, and choose the basic tier unless the additional products solve a real need. > **Price context:** Pricing was checked on 2026-10-21 and can change by region, tax, campaign, currency, term, and renewal cycle. ### Who should choose NordVPN NordVPN is our leading recommendation among these three for a buyer who wants one service to cover mainstream privacy, travel, streaming, occasional P2P use, and several advanced network scenarios. Repeated no-logs engagements, a modern default protocol, specialty servers, broad app coverage, and ten simultaneous connections make it easier to recommend than a bare-bones tunnel. It is also particularly interesting to technical users who can use Meshnet for remote access without exposing a service directly to the public internet. It is not automatically the best choice for every household. Surfshark is more flexible when unlimited simultaneous connections are decisive, while ExpressVPN offers a particularly approachable product and a broad list of selectable locations. NordVPN’s long-term discount also creates lock-in, and its growing suite can make plan comparison harder than it once was. Our verdict is based on documented design and external evidence, not a promise of universal speed or uninterrupted access. Users facing serious legal, occupational, or physical risks should seek threat-model-specific advice rather than relying on any commercial VPN alone. ## Verdict NordVPN earns our highest VPN rating because its documented privacy controls, repeated external assurance work, modern protocol, specialty network options, and mature apps form the most balanced package. Performance observations are attributed to protocol design, vendor information, or broader independent reporting, not presented as our own lab measurements. **Has NordVPN’s no-logs policy been independently reviewed?** Yes. NordVPN reports six independent assurance engagements through 2025, with the latest performed by Deloitte under ISAE 3000 (Revised). We compared 1Password's pricing, features and security pages, its privacy policy, its developer documentation and its October 2026 command-line release notes, as published on October 20, 2026. We have not used 1Password day to day ourselves, so this review describes what 1Password documents rather than how its apps feel in use. That distinction matters particularly for password manager reviews. A provider can document its architecture and an auditor can inspect defined controls, but neither proves how every future app build or server will behave under every condition. Our 4.7 rating reflects 1Password's documented security design, independent certification, broad platform support and developer tools. It does not mean the product is risk-free, that an audit is permanent certification, or that a password manager will solve all of a user's security needs. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from vendor documentation, published security and privacy information, and pricing pages; no TopRatedSoftware test results are claimed. ### Security, encryption, and privacy 1Password uses industry-recommended encryption algorithms with a dual-key model, so only you hold the keys that decrypt your data. All vault information is end-to-end encrypted with 256-bit AES. Signing in uses Secure Remote Password, which authenticates your account without sending your credentials over the internet, and 1Password says it is regularly assessed by independent experts. Access needs two things: your account password and a Secret Key. Watchtower alerts you to weak, reused or breached passwords. 1Password also says it only fills details after checking that the browser was signed by an identified developer, clears secrets from the clipboard, and asks for your input before showing or filling data. The company is SOC 2 Type 2 certified for data confidentiality, integrity and availability. The privacy policy separates two kinds of data. Your vault contents are encrypted with keys only you possess, and 1Password says it has no access to them unencrypted. Account and service data, such as your name, email address, payment details and support requests, is collected so 1Password can run the service, and payments go through a PCI-compliant processor. 1Password is a Canadian company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. ### What independent guidance says The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends using a password manager to generate and store a strong, unique password for every account, at least 16 characters long, and turning on multifactor authentication, especially for email, social media and financial accounts. Reusing one password across accounts, CISA warns, leaves you open to account takeovers. 1Password covers each of those points: its generator creates strong, unique passwords, Watchtower flags weak and reused ones, and it can store two-factor codes itself. What it cannot do is protect an account whose master password is weak, so CISA's advice to remember only one strong master password applies here too. ### Features, sharing, and daily use 1Password stores logins in encrypted vaults, along with bank accounts, payment cards, addresses and secure notes. Its built-in generator creates strong, unique passwords, and the apps save and autofill credentials. It can also store two-factor authentication codes, so you do not need a separate authenticator app, and it supports passkeys for passwordless sign-in on supported websites and apps. You can share items with anyone, including people who do not use 1Password, through links that expire, and you can track the history of what you shared. The Families plan covers 5 people, with unlimited shared vaults and simple admin controls for managing access. The apps run on macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows, Android and Linux, with browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and Brave. Travel Mode hides selected vaults while you cross a border, and you can sign in with Apple, Google or Facebook accounts. Developers get more. 1Password Developer stores SSH keys, API tokens and infrastructure secrets, and its command-line tool lets you use secrets during development. In October 2026, 1Password CLI 2.41.0 added an --environment flag to the op run command, which loads secrets from 1Password Environments. 1Password also documents ways to give AI coding agents access to secrets without putting them in prompts, config files or agent memory. ### Pricing and plan value as researched During its current promotion, 1Password Individual costs $2.99 a month and Families costs $4.49 a month, both billed annually. The regular prices are $3.99 and $5.99 a month. Individual covers one person and Families covers 5, each with 1GB of storage. Both plans include password generation, autosave and autofill, sharing with anyone, and alerts for weak or compromised credentials. Families adds unlimited shared vaults and admin controls. Business plans, from Teams Starter Pack to Enterprise, add SSO unlock, custom policies and device insights. There is no free plan. You can try 1Password free for 14 days without a credit card and cancel anytime, but after that you need a subscription. Bitwarden, by comparison, has a free plan and charges $1.65 a month for Premium. ### Who should choose 1Password Choose 1Password if you want a documented security design and are happy to pay for it: end-to-end encryption, a Secret Key alongside your password, SOC 2 Type 2 certification and regular independent assessment. It also suits households that share logins, since the Families plan covers 5 people with unlimited shared vaults. Developers have extra reasons to look at it. The same account can hold SSH keys and API tokens, inject secrets from the command line, and give AI coding agents scoped access to credentials. Shell plugins let AI command-line tools authenticate with your fingerprint instead of keeping API keys in shell profiles, and plugins for Claude Code and Cursor check .env files before an agent runs commands. Look elsewhere if you want a free plan or the lowest price. 1Password requires a subscription after the 14-day trial, the advertised prices are promotional, and the regular Individual price is $3.99 a month. Families is cheaper per person: $4.49 a month for 5 people works out to about 90 cents each. Bitwarden's free plan, by contrast, already covers unlimited devices. ## Verdict 1Password earns its rating through a documented security design: end-to-end encryption, a Secret Key alongside your password, SOC 2 Type 2 certification and regular independent assessment, plus apps on every major platform and strong developer tools. It has no free plan, so check the regular price before the promotion ends. ## Alternatives - [Bitwarden](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/bitwarden) (4.8/5): Free plan, and Premium costs $1.65 a month - [LastPass](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/lastpass) (4.2/5): Free plan for one device type; Premium from $3 a month - [Dashlane](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/dashlane) (4.5/5): Premium includes a VPN; Friends & Family covers 10 people ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test 1Password hands-on?** No. This is an expert-researched review built from the vendor documentation, pricing pages and independent sources listed below, not from our own tests. **How does 1Password ensure security?** 1Password uses industry-recommended encryption algorithms including end-to-end AES 256-bit encryption, a dual-key model where only you have keys to decrypt data, and Secure Remote Password for account authentication without sending credentials over the internet. **Does 1Password have a free plan?** No. 1Password offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. We reviewed ExpressVPN’s plan documentation, privacy policy, Trust Center and audit materials, Lightway and TrustedServer explanations, app support information, and July 2026 network announcement. This lets us evaluate design, disclosure quality, external review history, feature coverage, and price. It does not let us promise a particular throughput result or guarantee that a streaming platform or restrictive network will remain accessible. ExpressVPN receives 4.7 because it has one of the clearest infrastructure stories in the consumer VPN market and makes privacy usable for non-specialists. Its score sits just below NordVPN because the newly expanded suite can cost more and offers less aggressive entry value than Surfshark, while NordVPN has a broader set of specialty networking features. The differences are small: users who value straightforward apps, router support, and a very broad country list may reasonably prefer ExpressVPN. > **No simulated testing:** Claims below are based on vendor documentation and published independent assessments. They are not described as TopRatedSoftware lab findings. ### Privacy policy and independent scrutiny ExpressVPN states that it does not log browsing history, traffic destination, data content, or DNS queries, and does not keep connection logs that can tie a customer to an activity. Some operational data can still be collected, such as app activation, aggregate usage, chosen server location, dates connected, and total transferred data, subject to the current policy. That distinction is normal but important: “no logs” should never be interpreted as “the company processes no account, billing, diagnostics, or support data whatsoever.” The provider’s Trust Center catalogs a long series of assessments covering mobile and desktop apps, browser extensions, Lightway, privacy practices, and TrustedServer. KPMG has assessed privacy-policy controls and TrustedServer in prior engagements, while Cure53 has reviewed multiple components. Audit count alone is not a quality metric; scope, date, access, and remediation matter more. ExpressVPN’s advantage is the breadth and recurrence of review across different layers. Buyers should still open the linked reports, check what was excluded, and remember that each report represents a defined version and period. ### Lightway and TrustedServer architecture Lightway is ExpressVPN’s in-house protocol, built around a relatively compact open-source core and designed for quick reconnection when a device changes networks. Modern releases support wolfSSL and post-quantum protections in relevant modes, while OpenVPN remains available for compatibility. The practical appeal is less about headline speed and more about mobile resilience and reduced connection delay. Independent reviewers often report competitive performance, but those results belong to their environments. We make no claim that Lightway will produce the same rate on a particular home connection. TrustedServer is the more distinctive architectural control. ExpressVPN says its VPN servers run in volatile memory rather than writing the operating stack to a hard drive. On reboot, each machine loads a fresh signed image, reducing configuration drift and causing volatile data to disappear. This is a meaningful defense-in-depth measure, not magic: RAM-only operation does not prevent every software vulnerability, malicious update, account compromise, or endpoint leak. Its value comes from minimizing persistent server state and making the deployed software image more consistent across the fleet. ### Network, apps, and practical experience In July 2026, ExpressVPN announced 214 app-selectable locations across 113 countries. That is a location count, not a physical-server count, and the provider clearly identifies virtual locations in its directory. Virtual locations can offer an IP registered to a country while the hardware sits elsewhere, which may improve reliability where safe physical infrastructure is limited. Users who need a physically located endpoint for latency, regulation, or routing reasons should consult that directory instead of relying only on the country label. The service covers mainstream computers and phones, browsers, televisions, and routers. ExpressVPN’s Aircove hardware and router software are relevant for devices that cannot run a VPN client, although router routing adds setup and performance considerations. The 2026 desktop redesign exposes more status and settings than the old single-button window while retaining an approachable connection flow. Basic supports up to ten simultaneous devices, with higher tiers increasing the allowance. As with every VPN, exact split-tunneling and kill-switch support differs by operating system and version. ### 2026 pricing tiers and value ExpressVPN replaced its old one-product pricing with Basic, Advanced, and Pro tiers in 2026. On 2026-10-21 the US pricing page listed Basic at $2.99 per month on a two-year plan with four bonus months ($83.72 for the first 28 months, renewing at $99.95 per year), Advanced at $4.49 per month ($125.72, renewing at $119.95 per year), and Pro at $7.49 per month ($209.72, renewing at $199.95 per year). Basic includes the VPN, Lightway, TrustedServer, Threat Manager, and a ten-device allowance. Advanced adds a larger allowance and security-suite features such as ExpressKeys, while Pro expands the bundle further. Monthly rates are much higher, and some identity-protection features are specific to the United States. The displayed monthly equivalent is not the amount charged each month on a long plan. Customers pay the term upfront, may receive bonus months, and later renew under the amount and frequency disclosed at checkout. ExpressVPN says two-year introductory offers renew annually after the initial period. That detail can materially change lifetime cost. Basic is the rational default for most VPN buyers; Advanced and Pro make sense only if their additional tools replace products the customer would otherwise purchase. The 30-day money-back guarantee is conditional and does not create a free tier. > **Read the renewal disclosure:** The initial two-year effective monthly rate and the later annual renewal are different concepts. Pricing was checked on 2026-10-21; save the checkout terms shown when you buy. ### Best use cases and limitations ExpressVPN is especially persuasive for frequent travelers, households with less technical users, and buyers who need a choice of endpoints across many countries rather than the absolute largest raw server total. The combination of automatic location selection, Lightway reconnection, mature mobile apps, television support, and router options reduces the number of networking decisions a customer must make. Threat Manager and the kill switch are useful layers, but customers should continue using HTTPS, multifactor authentication, software updates, and endpoint protection. Do not buy solely for a claim that it “works everywhere.” Governments, workplaces, schools, hotels, and streaming companies can alter blocking systems without notice, and local law may restrict VPN use. ExpressVPN’s British Virgin Islands corporate jurisdiction and published audit program improve the trust analysis but do not eliminate the need to understand the user’s threat model. For ordinary public-Wi-Fi privacy and IP-address masking it is a polished option. For high-risk activism, source protection, or evading targeted surveillance, seek specialized operational-security guidance beyond a commercial subscription. ## Verdict ExpressVPN is a premium, evidence-rich VPN with unusually approachable apps, a strong RAM-only deployment model, and broad geographic choice. Basic is the best-value tier for most people; higher tiers deserve consideration only when their bundled tools replace separate subscriptions. ## Alternatives - [NordVPN](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/nordvpn) (4.8/5): More specialty networking features and repeated no-logs engagements — From $3.49/mo introductory - [Surfshark](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/surfshark) (4.6/5): Unlimited simultaneous devices and lower introductory pricing — From $2.49/mo introductory ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test ExpressVPN speeds?** No. This review evaluates published architecture, audits, features, platform support, and pricing. TopRatedSoftware did not operate a malware laboratory, execute threat samples, or independently measure detection rates. When protection percentages or lab designations are mentioned, they are attributed to the named testing organization. Our contribution is interpretation and comparison, not reproduction of laboratory work. Norton 360 receives 4.7 because it offers the broadest feature bundle of the three suites compared here, anchored by solid lab-validated protection and a genuinely useful unlimited VPN. It scores below Bitdefender primarily because published performance benchmarks suggest a somewhat heavier system footprint, and because some of its most distinctive features, particularly LifeLock, are restricted to US customers on upper-tier plans. The rating reflects documented strengths and limitations, not a universal endorsement of every bundled component. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from published AV-Test/AV-Comparatives reports, vendor documentation, and pricing pages. No TopRatedSoftware malware-lab result is claimed. ### Lab performance and detection capabilities Norton's core engine has earned AV-Test's Top Product award across multiple consecutive Windows evaluation cycles, typically achieving 6/6 in Protection and Usability. AV-Comparatives has also placed Norton among its top-tier products in Real-World Protection tests. The engine uses a combination of signatures, heuristics, reputation-based analysis through Norton Insight, and a behavioral monitor called SONAR that inspects running processes for suspicious activity. This multi-layer approach is standard among premium suites and is effective against the majority of known and zero-day threats captured in lab sample sets. Norton also offers a "Virus Protection Promise" for paying subscribers who maintain auto-renewal: if a Norton expert cannot remove a threat that bypasses the product, the customer may be eligible for a refund. The promise is subject to terms, including that the customer must have had Norton installed continuously and follow the expert's guidance. It is a meaningful confidence signal but should not be read as a mathematical guarantee of zero infections. No antivirus product can promise that, because new attack vectors, social engineering, and zero-day exploits are continuous realities. Lab scores measure performance against curated samples under controlled conditions, not against every possible future threat. ### VPN, backup, and the bundled-suite advantage The most distinctive practical feature of Norton 360 is its bundled unlimited VPN. Unlike Bitdefender's 200 MB/day cap on lower tiers or Kaspersky's similar restriction, Norton includes a full VPN across its 360 product line. The VPN uses WireGuard on supported platforms, provides a kill switch, and covers the device count of the chosen plan. It is not as feature-rich as a standalone VPN service like NordVPN or ExpressVPN — it lacks specialty servers, multi-hop routing, and advanced obfuscation — but for everyday public-Wi-Fi protection and IP masking it is a credible inclusion that saves the cost of a separate subscription. Cloud backup is another differentiator. Norton provides automatic encrypted backup to cloud storage, with capacity ranging from 10 GB on the Standard plan to 250 GB on the highest tiers. This does not replace a comprehensive backup strategy involving local copies and multiple destinations, but it does give ransomware victims an offsite recovery point that the malware cannot easily reach. The combination of antivirus, VPN, and backup in a single subscription reduces the number of vendors, bills, and dashboards a household must manage, which is a genuine usability benefit even if each component is not best-in-class when evaluated in isolation. ### Identity monitoring and LifeLock Dark web monitoring is available across Norton 360 plans and scans known data-breach repositories for the user's email addresses, phone numbers, and other personal identifiers. If a match is found, the user receives a notification and guidance. This is reactive, not preventive: it tells you after exposure has occurred rather than stopping the breach. It is still useful because many people are unaware that their credentials have been compromised until damage is done. LifeLock, available on select US-only plans, extends identity protection to include credit monitoring, identity-theft insurance, and access to restoration specialists. The insurance covers certain expenses related to identity recovery up to plan-specific limits. LifeLock's value proposition depends heavily on geography, existing credit-monitoring arrangements, and individual risk profile. A US customer with no other identity-monitoring service may find it compelling. An international customer, or one who already has credit freezes and monitoring through a bank or bureau, may see less marginal benefit and should weigh the tier's higher price against their specific exposure. ### Pricing, plans, and renewal reality Norton sells several 360 configurations. On 2026-10-21 the US site listed 360 Standard (three devices, 2 GB backup) at $39.99 for the first year, renewing at $94.99; 360 Deluxe (five devices, 50 GB backup) at $49.99, renewing at $124.99; and 360 with LifeLock Select Plus (ten devices, 250 GB backup) at $99.99, renewing at $189.99. Higher LifeLock tiers escalate further. These are first-year promotional prices, and the renewal rates are roughly two to two and a half times the introductory amount. The exact checkout total depends on active campaigns, country, device count, LifeLock tier, and tax. A 60-day money-back policy applies under the current terms, which is longer than the 30-day window offered by most competitors. The most common value trap is comparing the introductory annual rate with a competitor's renewal price, or vice versa. Norton's first year for Deluxe is competitive, but the renewal for five devices is $124.99 per year. Buyers should record the renewal amount shown at checkout and calendar a reminder before the second billing cycle. If the bundled VPN and backup genuinely replace separate services the buyer would otherwise purchase, the total cost of ownership can be favorable. If those extras go unused, a leaner suite like Bitdefender Antivirus Plus or Kaspersky Standard may be more economical over a multi-year period. > **Price context:** Pricing was checked on 2026-10-21 and can change by region, promotion, device count, LifeLock tier, and renewal cycle. Renewal pricing is typically higher than the introductory rate. ### Who should choose Norton 360 Norton 360 is the strongest recommendation for a buyer who wants to consolidate antivirus, VPN, backup, and identity monitoring into a single subscription. The suite approach reduces administrative overhead and ensures that all protection layers come from one vendor, update together, and share a single management console. US customers who lack separate identity-monitoring arrangements will get the most incremental value from LifeLock tiers. The unlimited VPN is a genuine differentiator for anyone who would otherwise subscribe to a standalone VPN service. It is not the best choice for every user. Buyers who already have a dedicated VPN, cloud backup, and credit monitoring may be paying for redundant features. The system-impact difference relative to Bitdefender, while not dramatic, is measurable in published lab benchmarks and may matter on older or lower-specification hardware. International buyers who cannot access LifeLock are paying a premium for a narrower bundle than US customers receive at the same price. Our rating reflects Norton's documented strengths — lab performance, VPN inclusion, backup, and breadth — not a guarantee that every bundled component is the best available in its individual category. ## Verdict Norton 360 earns its rating by offering the widest integrated security bundle: solid lab-validated antivirus, an unlimited VPN, cloud backup, and optional identity-theft protection under one subscription. The trade-off is a somewhat heavier footprint and higher renewal pricing. Buy for the breadth, but compare two-year total cost before choosing a tier. ## Alternatives - [Bitdefender](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/bitdefender) (4.8/5): Lower system impact and stronger lab consistency at the same introductory price — From $39.99/yr introductory - [Kaspersky](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/kaspersky) (4.6/5): Comparable protection with lighter resource use; not sold to new US customers — Not sold in the US ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test Norton 360 in a malware lab?** No. Protection scores cited here are from published AV-Test and AV-Comparatives reports. We did not conduct independent malware-detection testing. **Is the Norton VPN good enough to replace a standalone VPN?** It provides basic WireGuard-based tunneling with a kill switch, suitable for public-Wi-Fi protection and IP masking. It lacks advanced features like multi-hop, obfuscation, and specialty servers found in dedicated VPN services. **Is LifeLock available outside the US?** No. LifeLock identity-theft protection features are currently limited to US customers. International 360 plans include the antivirus, VPN, backup, and dark web monitoring but not LifeLock. ## Sources - [AV-Test evaluation reports for Norton](https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/) — Independent test results for Windows home-user products; Norton has received consecutive Top Product designations. - [AV-Comparatives summary reports](https://www.av-comparatives.org/consumer/) — Independent lab publishing Real-World Protection and Performance tests; Norton has earned top-tier ratings in multiple rounds. - [Norton 360 plans and pricing](https://us.norton.com/products) — Official vendor product comparison and pricing; checked 2026-10-21. We compared Proton VPN's pricing and features pages, server list, support articles, privacy policy, transparency report and the vendor's summary of its independent no-logs audit, as published on October 18, 2026. Performance language is therefore deliberately qualified: speed varies with the user's line, Wi-Fi, distance, congestion, server selection, device, and protocol. No single third-party benchmark should be read as a guaranteed result. That distinction matters particularly for VPN reviews. A provider can document its architecture and an auditor can inspect defined controls, but neither proves how every future app build or server will behave under every condition. Our 4.7 rating reflects Proton VPN's strong privacy assurance, open-source app approach, and repeated independent audits, along with a mature platform. It does not mean the product is risk-free, that an audit is permanent certification, or that a VPN makes a user anonymous against all forms of tracking. The service has a robust privacy foundation and makes its data available to users through published audits. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from vendor documentation, published audit and transparency information, and pricing pages; no TopRatedSoftware throughput or leak-test result is claimed. ### Privacy, ownership, and audit evidence Proton VPN operates under Swiss law, which Proton describes as some of the strongest privacy law in the world. Proton says it cannot be obligated under Swiss law to start logging, and that it only complies with legally binding requests from Swiss authorities. The service maintains a strict no-logs policy that has been independently verified through annual audits conducted by Securitum. Proton VPN has passed its fifth consecutive annual third-party audit, confirming that no user activity, DNS queries, or connection metadata are logged. The vendor also publishes all audit reports without requiring non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), allowing any prospective buyer to review the details of these independent confirmations. Its transparency report lists every legal request for VPN user data from 2020 to 2025 as denied, including 59 in 2025, because it has no activity logs to hand over. ### Protocols, infrastructure, and security tools Proton VPN supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and its own Stealth protocol, which tunnels WireGuard over TLS to get past censorship. All apps are open-source and undergo regular independent audits for security enhancements. The service includes a robust kill switch, DNS leak protection, forward secrecy for each session, and port forwarding features. Its servers use full disk encryption and operate in data centers with physical security. A key feature is Secure Core, which routes connections through multiple servers to defend against timing/correlation attacks in high-risk jurisdictions. These servers are located in Switzerland, Iceland, and Sweden, and Proton owns them outright. Paid plans also include the NetShield ad-blocker, which blocks ads, trackers, and malware. Proton's server list shows 20,839 servers in 149 countries, all of them using full-disk encryption. Secure Core runs on 124 servers in 68 countries and is available on every paid plan. Proton says the Swedish Secure Core servers sit in underground data centers and the Icelandic ones on a former military base. NetShield draws on public blocklists such as EasyList, and Proton runs its own DNS servers that encrypt DNS requests so browsing history does not leak to your internet provider. The Free plan still includes the kill switch and the Stealth protocol. ### Apps, daily use, and performance expectations Proton VPN supports the main desktop and mobile operating systems plus browsers, streaming devices, and compatible routers. The apps are open-source, undergo regular independent security audits, and feature strong encryption using AES-256 and ChaCha20 at their highest settings. Because the code is open and the audits are published, anyone can check Proton's claims rather than take them on trust. We have not measured Proton VPN's speeds. Proton says its network offers connections of up to 10 Gbps and that VPN Accelerator can improve speeds by up to 400% over long distances; treat both as vendor claims. The apps include split tunneling, port forwarding, a kill switch, and an always-on VPN option. ### Pricing and plan value as researched Proton VPN offers a free tier that includes unlimited bandwidth and no data or speed limits, but with only one simultaneous connection and access to 10 countries randomly selected from their network. Plus costs $9.99 a month month-to-month, or $3.49 a month on the two-year plan: $83.76 for the first 24 months, then $83.88 every 12 months. It covers ten devices at once and adds Secure Core, NetShield, streaming support and P2P. Proton Unlimited adds Proton Pass, Mail, Calendar and Drive. It costs $7.99 a month on the two-year plan (38% off $12.99): $191.76 for the first 24 months, then $119.88 every 12 months. Every paid plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee, and the no-logs policy covers all plans, including Free. Plus is the plan to compare against other VPNs; Unlimited only makes sense if you would also use Proton's other apps. The Free plan is a real way to try the apps first, but it is limited to one device and servers in 10 countries. > **Price context:** Pricing was checked on 2026-10-18 and can change by region, tax, campaign, currency, term, and renewal cycle. ### Who should choose Proton VPN Choose Proton VPN if verifiable privacy matters most to you. Its no-logs policy has passed five consecutive annual audits, the full reports are public without an NDA, and its transparency report shows every VPN data request from 2020 to 2025 was denied. Users who appreciate openness and transparency will value the fact that Proton VPN is an open-source project with regular security reviews. The Swiss privacy legislation adds strength to the service's commitment to user privacy. For users concerned about data collection in high-risk jurisdictions, features like Secure Core offer additional layers of defense. Look elsewhere if you need more than ten devices at once, or if you want Secure Core or ad blocking without paying: both need a paid plan. Also budget for the renewal price, since the advertised $3.49 a month only applies to the first two years. ## Verdict Proton VPN earns a strong rating for its documented privacy controls, repeated third-party assurance work, Swiss jurisdiction base, modern app structure with open-source code, and extensive feature set. Buy on the strength of these documented qualities, focusing on the no-logs policy and independent verification rather than assuming universal speed or uninterrupted access. ## Alternatives - [NordVPN](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/nordvpn) (4.8/5): Higher plans bundle antivirus, a password manager and cloud storage - [ExpressVPN](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/expressvpn) (4.7/5): Documents a RAM-only server design across a broad location list - [Surfshark](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/surfshark) (4.6/5): Lower promotional pricing and unlimited simultaneous device connections ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test Proton VPN hands-on?** No. This is an expert-researched review built from the vendor documentation, pricing pages and independent sources listed below, not from our own tests. **Has Proton VPN independently reviewed its no-logs policy?** Yes. Proton VPN has passed its fifth consecutive annual third-party audit by Securitum, a European security auditing company. The audit confirms the service maintains its no-logs policy across all servers and subscription tiers. **Does Proton VPN have a free plan?** Yes. Proton VPN offers a free tier with unlimited bandwidth, no speed limits, and no logs policy. It supports one device connection and access to 10 randomly selected countries out of its server network. ## Sources - [Proton VPN pricing](https://protonvpn.com/pricing) — Vendor pricing page used to verify plan structure, promotional pricing and renewal details on 2026-10-18. - [Proton VPN features](https://protonvpn.com/features) — Feature descriptions used to identify key security capabilities including VPN protocols, apps, server locations, privacy features, and device support as of 2026-10-18. - [Proton VPN no-logs audit](https://protonvpn.com/blog/no-logs-audit) — Vendor summary of Securitum's 2026 third-party engagement and details around the scope of no-logs verification including audits in years 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. - [Proton VPN servers](https://protonvpn.com/vpn-servers) — Server list used for the count of 20,839 servers in 149 countries and the Secure Core server count. - [Proton transparency report](https://proton.me/legal/transparency) — Legal requests for VPN user data by year, 2020 to 2025, all listed as denied. - [Proton VPN privacy policy](https://protonvpn.com/privacy-policy) — Current privacy policy details used to verify service structure, server ownership, encryption standards, data management and Swiss jurisdiction benefits as of 2026-10-18. ## Disclosure and citation TopRatedSoftware may earn a commission from some links. TopRatedSoftware did not operate a malware lab, execute samples, or independently measure detection rates for this article. When lab scores are cited, they belong to the named testing organization. A review of Kaspersky that ignores the geopolitical context would be incomplete. The US government banned the sale of new Kaspersky products to US consumers effective mid-2024, citing national-security concerns related to the company's Russian jurisdiction. Kaspersky disputes those characterizations and has undertaken transparency measures, including moving certain data-processing operations to Switzerland and opening Transparency Centers for source-code review. We do not have the intelligence access to independently verify either side's claims. What we can say is that the technical product, judged purely by published lab results, is excellent. Whether the jurisdictional risk is acceptable is a personal and organizational decision that depends on the buyer's threat model, geography, and risk tolerance. We disclose this so readers can make an informed choice rather than encountering it as a surprise. > **Geopolitical disclosure:** Kaspersky's Russian headquarters have led to government restrictions in some countries. We evaluate the technical product on published evidence while disclosing this context transparently. ### Independent lab performance Kaspersky's Windows engine has achieved AV-Test's Top Product designation across many consecutive evaluation periods, frequently earning 6/6 in Protection, Performance, and Usability. AV-Comparatives has similarly placed Kaspersky among its top-rated products, awarding Advanced+ in Real-World Protection and Malware Protection tests. These results place Kaspersky in the same top tier as Bitdefender and Norton on pure detection capability. The engine combines signature matching, cloud-assisted reputation lookups, heuristic analysis, and System Watcher behavioral monitoring that can roll back malicious changes. System Watcher deserves specific mention because it operates as a behavioral safety net: if a new or unknown process begins encrypting files or modifying system settings in ways consistent with malware, System Watcher can terminate the process and reverse the changes. This is conceptually similar to Bitdefender's Ransomware Remediation and provides meaningful defense against zero-day threats that signature-based detection may initially miss. Published AV-Test performance benchmarks also place Kaspersky among the lighter suites, showing minimal impact on application launch times and file operations during background protection, which is consistent with independent reviewers' observations over many years. ### Safe Money, application control, and security tools Safe Money is Kaspersky's hardened browser environment for online banking and payments. When a user navigates to a recognized financial site, Kaspersky can open it in a protected browser session that isolates it from keyloggers, screen-capture tools, and clipboard-hijacking malware. This is a practical control for a common high-value use case: online banking on a shared or potentially compromised machine. It does not protect against phishing if the user enters credentials on a fraudulent site, and it does not cover every financial institution automatically, but it adds a meaningful security layer for routine transactions. Application Control restricts what programs can do based on trust levels derived from Kaspersky's cloud reputation database and local behavioral analysis. Unknown applications receive limited system access until they are classified. This reduces the attack surface from newly downloaded or sideloaded software. Network Attack Blocker monitors incoming traffic for known exploit patterns. The VPN, based on Hotspot Shield technology in some markets, is capped at 300 MB per day on the Standard tier; Plus and Premium include unlimited VPN traffic. As with Bitdefender's VPN cap, the Standard allowance is too small for general browsing and serves primarily as a brief-session public-Wi-Fi shield. ### Product tiers and what each includes Kaspersky's 2026 consumer lineup consists of Standard, Plus, and Premium. Standard provides real-time malware protection, Safe Money, the limited VPN, and performance optimization tools. Plus adds unlimited VPN, a password manager, a data-leak checker, and additional privacy controls. Premium extends the package with identity protection, premium support, and Kaspersky Safe Kids parental controls. A free edition (Kaspersky Free) offers basic real-time antivirus scanning without charge, similar in scope to Bitdefender Free. The feature stacking is logical but can make comparison harder than it should be. Buyers who want the full VPN must step up to Plus, and those who want parental controls need Premium. Norton 360 Deluxe bundles VPN and dark web monitoring at a single price point, while Kaspersky spreads them across tiers. Whether this granularity is an advantage (pay only for what you need) or an annoyance (more decisions to make) depends on the buyer. The password manager in Plus and Premium is functional for basic vault use but less feature-complete than standalone options like 1Password, which offer better cross-platform integration, sharing, and organizational features. ### Pricing, value, and renewal terms On 2026-10-21 Kaspersky's US site still described Standard, Plus, and Premium but showed no prices, consistent with the 2024 ban on sales to new US customers. Outside the US, Kaspersky sells the same three tiers through regional sites in local currency, with introductory first-year prices and higher renewal rates; Kaspersky's renewal markup has historically been less aggressive than Norton's. Exact pricing varies by retailer, country, promotion, and device count, so check the regional site for your market. Where it is sold, Kaspersky Standard has historically matched or undercut Bitdefender Antivirus Plus on first-year price while delivering comparable lab scores. Plus with unlimited VPN competes with Norton 360 Deluxe at a lower introductory price, though Norton includes cloud backup and broader identity monitoring at that tier. Premium attempts to match Norton's LifeLock proposition but with less-established identity-protection features and no US-specific insurance product. The strongest Kaspersky value case is Standard or Plus for a buyer who values lab-validated protection, low system impact, and Safe Money at a competitive price, and who has evaluated the geopolitical context and finds it acceptable for their circumstances. > **Price and availability context:** Pricing was checked on 2026-10-21: the US site lists no prices. Verify current retail access and pricing in your market before purchase. ### Who should consider Kaspersky Kaspersky is a technically excellent antivirus product whose lab credentials match or rival any competitor on the market. Where it is sold, it has historically been one of the most affordable entries into top-tier protection on introductory pricing, and its system footprint is among the lightest published. Safe Money and System Watcher are genuinely useful features that serve real security needs. For a buyer whose threat model does not include concerns about the vendor's Russian jurisdiction, Kaspersky Standard or Plus represents strong value. It is not the right choice for everyone. Buyers in government, defense, critical infrastructure, or regulated industries may face explicit prohibitions or compliance risks. Individuals who are uncomfortable with the geopolitical situation should choose Bitdefender or Norton without second-guessing themselves — peace of mind is itself a security asset. US buyers cannot purchase new Kaspersky subscriptions because of the federal restriction and should choose Bitdefender or Norton instead. Our rating of 4.6 reflects excellent technical performance tempered by the transparency obligation to disclose a material non-technical risk factor. The technical product deserves a higher score; the overall recommendation accounts for the full picture a buyer needs. ## Verdict Kaspersky delivers lab-validated protection that matches the best in the industry at a competitive price. The geopolitical disclosure is a material factor that buyers must evaluate for themselves. Those who accept it will find an excellent, lightweight security product; those who do not should choose Bitdefender or Norton with equal confidence. ## Alternatives - [Bitdefender](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/bitdefender) (4.8/5): Comparable lab scores without geopolitical concerns — From $39.99/yr introductory - [Norton 360](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/norton) (4.7/5): Broader identity-protection bundle with LifeLock in the US — From $39.99/yr introductory ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test Kaspersky in a malware lab?** No. Lab scores cited here are from published AV-Test and AV-Comparatives reports. We reviewed Surfshark’s live pricing and server pages, privacy policy, Trust Center material, protocol and Nexus documentation, app-store information, and public description of Deloitte’s 2025 no-logs assurance engagement. We also compared the advertised capabilities with current market alternatives. We did not generate a throughput average, run long-distance latency trials, or claim continuous success with individual streaming catalogs. Surfshark scores 4.6 because it combines a low promotional entry price with unlimited simultaneous connections and a feature set that is no longer merely “budget.” NordVPN remains more compelling for repeated assurance history and specialty networking depth, while ExpressVPN has a particularly mature usability and infrastructure narrative. Surfshark is nevertheless the easiest value recommendation for a device-heavy household. The principal caution is commercial rather than technical: its dramatic introductory discount can obscure the later renewal cost. > **Evidence standard:** Vendor claims are identified as such, audit language is scoped, and no hands-on TopRatedSoftware performance result is implied. ### No-logs claim, jurisdiction, and assurance Surfshark says it does not keep logs of browsing activity, IP addresses, session information, bandwidth use, connection timestamps, or network traffic. In June 2025, Deloitte completed an ISAE 3000 reasonable-assurance engagement addressing the description and implementation of controls supporting that policy. Public summaries say the work covered relevant VPN server types and operational controls. This is useful external evidence because it goes beyond a marketing statement, though readers should check the exact period, criteria, and report availability before treating it as current forever. Surfshark operates from the Netherlands, a European Union jurisdiction where account and business data can be subject to legal process and GDPR obligations. Jurisdiction headlines alone are a poor proxy for privacy: data minimization, server configuration, internal access, and validated operational practice are more informative. The no-logs claim concerns VPN usage records, not every category of personal data. Surfshark still processes details needed for accounts, payment, support, security, and optional products. Anonymous payment methods can reduce payment linkage but do not erase account or device metadata automatically. ### Server network and advanced routing Surfshark’s official pricing page reported more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries, with the fleet upgraded to 10Gbps capability. A port rating is server capacity, not a promise that one subscriber will receive that speed. The company describes the fleet as RAM-only, meaning server state is intended to disappear on reboot rather than persist to local disks. As with other providers, country coverage includes different physical and virtual arrangements, so users with a location-sensitive workload should verify the current server directory. WireGuard is the practical default for many users, with OpenVPN and IKEv2 available on supported systems. Dynamic MultiHop lets a customer choose entry and exit locations, adding separation at the cost of more distance and processing. IP Rotator changes the visible address without intentionally dropping the VPN connection, while Surfshark’s Nexus design connects users to a broader software-defined network before applying routing features. These tools expand the threat-model options, but they do not make browser fingerprints, signed-in accounts, cookies, or malware disappear. ### Unlimited devices and app experience Surfshark’s defining commercial feature is unlimited simultaneous connections. A single household account can protect computers, phones, tablets, televisions, and other supported devices without counting to ten or fourteen. “Unlimited” should still be read with the subscription terms: it is meant for legitimate personal or household use, not resale or operating a public proxy service. Router installation can cover unsupported devices, but native apps generally provide clearer per-device controls and easier troubleshooting. Apps are available across the major desktop, mobile, browser, and television platforms. Features differ because Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Linux networking stacks expose different capabilities. Bypasser split tunneling, kill-switch modes, CleanWeb behavior, and protocol availability should be checked on the intended OS. CleanWeb blocks known advertising, tracker, and malicious domains, but DNS-based blocking cannot remove every first-party advertisement or replace browser hardening. Alternative ID can create a proxy email identity for sign-ups; it is a privacy convenience, not a complete identity-protection system. ### Pricing, bundles, and renewal risk Surfshark sells Starter, One, and One+ in monthly, one-year, and two-year forms. On 2026-10-21 the US pricing page listed Starter and One at $2.49 per month on a two-year plan with three extra months ($67.23 for the first 27 months before tax) and One+ at $3.99 per month ($107.73). While Starter and One share the same promotional price, One adds more for the same first charge, though its monthly rate is higher. One adds Antivirus, private search, and breach alerts. One+ adds Incogni data-broker removal in eligible regions. The core VPN, unlimited connections, CleanWeb, and Alternative ID are already present in Starter. The long-term monthly figure is an arithmetic equivalent, not monthly billing. Surfshark charges the initial term upfront and says a two-year subscription renews annually afterward at the applicable renewal price, which its pricing page does not state. Month-to-month Starter costs $18.95, illustrating how heavily the offer rewards commitment. Taxes, currency, coupons, bonus months, and location can change the checkout total. Buyers should screenshot or save the renewal disclosure and evaluate total cost over three years, not only the first promotional term. > **Best-value tier:** Starter contains the complete VPN. One and One+ are security bundles whose value depends on whether their antivirus, monitoring, search, or removal services replace existing tools. ### Who Surfshark is best for Surfshark is the strongest fit for families, shared households, and individuals with many devices. It is also attractive to users who want configurable multi-hop routing or rotating IP behavior without moving to a specialist provider. The promotional price makes trying a full-featured service less expensive than many rivals, subject to the refund terms. Independent publications often report strong WireGuard performance and streaming compatibility, but those observations are not our measurements and should be treated as time-sensitive rather than guaranteed. Choose another service if predictable renewal cost matters more than the lowest initial price, if you prefer a smaller product with fewer bundle decisions, or if a specific audited component and report scope is central to your risk assessment. A VPN protects traffic between the device and VPN server and substitutes the server’s public IP; it does not secure a compromised endpoint or make authenticated activity anonymous to the service being used. Surfshark offers excellent household economics, but good operational habits remain essential regardless of provider. ## Verdict Surfshark is a full-featured VPN with exceptional household value, not merely a cheap alternative. Unlimited connections, a recently assessed no-logs policy, and advanced routing tools make Starter the sweet spot, provided the buyer understands the prepaid term and higher renewal economics. ## Alternatives - [NordVPN](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/nordvpn) (4.8/5): More repeated no-logs assurance work and Meshnet — From $3.49/mo introductory - [ExpressVPN](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/expressvpn) (4.7/5): Simpler premium experience and broader selectable-location count — From $2.99/mo introductory ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware run speed tests on Surfshark?** No. This is an expert-researched review based on vendor documentation, published audit information, and market research. We compared Dashlane's personal pricing page, its password manager and security pages, its privacy policy, its passkey page and its October 2026 passkey adoption report, as published on October 20, 2026. We have not used Dashlane day to day ourselves, so this review describes what Dashlane documents rather than how its apps feel in use. That distinction matters particularly for password manager reviews. A provider can document its architecture, but that does not prove how every future app build or server will behave under every condition. Our 4.5 rating reflects Dashlane's documented zero-knowledge design, passkey support, scam protection and the VPN in Premium, weighed against its price. It does not mean the product is risk-free or that a password manager will solve all of a user's security needs. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from vendor documentation, the privacy policy, a vendor research report, and pricing pages; no TopRatedSoftware hands-on experience or testing result is claimed. ### Security features and privacy protection Dashlane encrypts and decrypts your vault locally on your devices, and says only you hold the keys, so it can never see your credentials. Vault encryption uses AES256-CBC-HMAC for confidentiality and integrity, and keys are derived with Argon2d (3 iterations, 32 MB of memory, 2 threads). Logging in on a new device generates a unique 40-byte key, and the secrets used for vault encryption are kept separate from those used for device authentication. Dashlane says it extends the same zero-knowledge approach to its cloud services using AWS Nitro Enclaves, which isolate data at the hardware level, and that it holds 8 patents for its zero-knowledge security with 6 more pending. Those are Dashlane's own descriptions; we did not find an independent audit report among the pages we reviewed. The privacy policy says Dashlane cannot access your master password or decrypt the data stored in your vault. It does collect account data: an email address to create an account, IP addresses kept for 45 days, and usage data. Payment details go through third-party processors and are not kept after processing, and most data is deleted within 30 days of closing your account. Dashlane says it does not use personal data for automated decision-making or consumer profiling. ### Password management features and daily use Dashlane stores unlimited passwords on unlimited devices and syncs them across browsers and operating systems. AI-powered Autofill signs you in without typing, the generator creates strong passwords as you sign up, and a password health check flags weak or compromised ones with suggested next steps. Secure notes come with 1GB of encrypted document storage, and the vault keeps password history. Scam Protection analyzes sites and warns you about suspicious ones before you log in, alongside real-time phishing alerts, dark web monitoring and breach alerts. You can share logins securely with people you trust, and Premium includes a VPN for protection on public Wi-Fi. Live chat support is available on both personal plans. ### Passkeys and passwordless sign-in Dashlane saves passkeys in the same vault as your passwords, where you can view, edit and delete them. When you sign up on a site that supports passkeys, Dashlane offers to create one, and when you enter your username on a site where you have a saved passkey, it asks whether to use it. Dashlane says it was the first password manager to demonstrate passkey support on Android and iOS, and it is a board-level member of the FIDO Alliance. Dashlane also publishes data on how passkeys are used. Its October 2026 Passkey Power 20 report says monthly passkey sign-ins by its users nearly doubled in a year to 2.5 million, and that 57% of its users now store at least one passkey, up from 40%. The same report shows passkeys still account for only 28% of measured Google logins, so most people will need passwords and passkeys side by side for some time. ### What independent guidance says The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) calls a password manager one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from account theft. It recommends passwords that are long (at least 16 characters), random and unique to each account, plus multifactor authentication, especially on email, social media and financial accounts. Dashlane covers those points: its generator creates strong passwords, its health check flags weak and reused ones, and it supports 2FA. CISA's remaining advice applies to you rather than to Dashlane: protect the account with one long, memorable passphrase as your master password, because Dashlane has no access to it. ### Pricing and plan value as researched Dashlane has two personal plans and no free plan. Premium costs $5.42 a month, billed annually, and covers one person with unlimited passwords and devices, scam protection, phishing and breach alerts, dark web monitoring, secure sharing and the VPN. You can try Premium free for 14 days. Friends & Family costs $8.13 a month for 10 members, billed annually. Each member gets a private account with their own phishing protection and breach alerts, and the plan manager gets a dashboard for managing members. The VPN is limited to the plan manager. Per person, Friends & Family works out to well under a dollar a month, which is where Dashlane's pricing is most competitive. ### Who should choose Dashlane Choose Dashlane if you want scam protection, passkeys and a VPN in one subscription, or if you are paying for a household: Friends & Family covers 10 people for $8.13 a month. Its documented zero-knowledge design, with vaults decrypted only on your devices, suits people who want the provider unable to read their data. Look elsewhere if price matters most. Premium costs $5.42 a month, against $1.65 for Bitwarden Premium and $3.00 for LastPass Premium, and Dashlane has no free plan. If you already pay for a VPN, much of Premium's extra value is something you have elsewhere. ## Verdict Dashlane earns its rating with a documented zero-knowledge design, passkeys stored next to passwords, AI-powered scam protection and a VPN in Premium. It has no free plan and Premium costs more than its rivals, so it makes most sense for households on Friends & Family or for people who want the VPN included. ## Alternatives - [Bitwarden](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/bitwarden) (4.8/5): Free plan, and Premium costs $1.65 a month - [LastPass](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/lastpass) (4.2/5): Free plan for one device type; Premium from $3 a month - [1Password](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/1password) (4.7/5): SOC 2 Type 2 certified, with developer tools for SSH keys and secrets ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test Dashlane hands-on?** No. This is an expert-researched review built from the vendor documentation, pricing pages and independent sources listed below, not from our own tests. **Does Dashlane offer a free plan?** No. Dashlane offers a 14-day free trial of Premium, but there is no permanent free plan. Premium then costs $5.42 a month, billed annually. **What makes Dashlane's security different?** Dashlane uses a zero-knowledge architecture where only users hold the keys to their data. No user credentials or personal information can be accessed by Dashlane itself, with encryption occurring locally on devices. ## Sources - [Dashlane Premium pricing](https://www.dashlane.com/pricing-personal) — Vendor pricing page showing Premium plan costs $5.42/mo annual billing and includes features like import passwords, auto-login, phishing protection, breach alerts, and VPN. - [Dashlane password manager features](https://www.dashlane.com/personal-password-manager) — Vendor documentation describing core features including real-time scam protection, cross-platform sync, AI-powered Autofill, and password generator capabilities. - [Dashlane security architecture](https://www.dashlane.com/security) — Technical details about zero-knowledge encryption, AWS Nitro Enclaves for cloud protection, vault encryption using AES256-CBC-HMAC, key derivation using Argon2d, and confidential computing for secure processing. - [Dashlane privacy policy](https://www.dashlane.com/privacy) — Vendor privacy documentation describing data collection practices, IP address retention, usage data handling, and how encryption keys remain with users rather than being accessible by Dashlane. - [CISA: use strong passwords](https://www.cisa.gov/secure-our-world/use-strong-passwords) — US government guidance on password managers, 16-character passwords and multifactor authentication. - [Dashlane passkeys](https://www.dashlane.com/passkeys) — How Dashlane creates, stores and uses passkeys, and its FIDO Alliance membership. - [Dashlane Passkey Power 20 report](https://www.dashlane.com/press-releases/dashlane-passkey-power-20-report-adoption-gap-emerges) — October 2026 vendor report on passkey adoption among Dashlane users and at major services. ## Disclosure and citation TopRatedSoftware may earn a commission from some links. We compared LastPass's pricing, Plus, VPN, features and security pages, its release notes, and an independent investigation of the 2022 breach by KrebsOnSecurity, as published on October 20, 2026. Features are described as LastPass documents them, not from our own tests. That distinction matters particularly for password manager reviews. A provider can document its architecture and certifications, but neither proves how well an old vault holds up once an attacker has a copy of it. Our 4.2 rating weighs LastPass's low prices, free plan, features and certifications against the breach and how slowly older accounts were moved to stronger settings. It does not mean the product is risk-free, or that any single password manager can protect against every form of compromise. LastPass is still adding features. Its October 13, 2026 release notes added AI Monitoring & Protect to SaaS Protect in the business Admin Console, which shows which AI tools a company's staff use and warns them when they paste sensitive data into one. Its new browser extension is out for Chrome, Edge and Safari, with Firefox and Opera listed as coming soon. > **Research status:** Expert-researched from vendor documentation, security statements, release notes, pricing pages and independent breach reporting; no TopRatedSoftware testing or performance evaluation is claimed. ### Password management and core features LastPass stores passwords and other sensitive information in an encrypted vault, then saves and autofills them across browsers and devices, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Android, iPhone and iPad. It generates strong passwords and random usernames, and it creates, stores and manages passkeys alongside passwords. Passwordless vault login lets you open the vault without typing your master password, using options such as fingerprint or face recognition. A security dashboard flags weak, reused and old passwords with recommendations, and dark web monitoring alerts you if your details turn up there. You can share credentials with family, friends or colleagues and control who sees what and when. Secure notes hold Wi-Fi logins and banking details, emergency access gives a trusted contact one-time access to your vault, and a digital will feature leaves copies of your digital life behind. ### Security practices and privacy LastPass says it uses a zero-knowledge architecture: your vault is encrypted with 256-bit AES, with PBKDF2 hashing and SHA-256 salting, so the master password is the key to it. It autofills credentials only on matching URLs, supports multifactor authentication, and for businesses adds single sign-on and adaptive, risk-based authentication. The company holds ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, BSI C5 and TRUSTe certifications, has trusted security organizations audit and test its service, and runs a bug bounty program for outside researchers. It also maintains a global data privacy program for customer and user data. Business plans add more control. Admins manage users, accounts and policies from one console, connect existing user directories, offer federated login and extend LastPass multifactor authentication to workstations. Business Max includes SaaS Monitoring & Protect, which finds the apps staff use and sets usage rules, and the new AI Monitoring & Protect, which does the same for AI tools. ### The 2022 breach and what it means now In November 2022, LastPass disclosed that attackers had stolen password vaults containing encrypted and plaintext data for more than 25 million users. A stolen encrypted vault can be attacked offline with unlimited guesses, so how safe it is depends on the master password and on the encryption settings the account had at the time. Those settings varied by when people joined. KrebsOnSecurity reported in 2023 that researcher Wladimir Palant found many older accounts still at 5,000 PBKDF2 iterations, and some between 1 and 500, against 600,000 for recent accounts. LastPass had required 12-character master passwords since 2018 but did not force existing customers to change theirs. Investigators linked crypto thefts from more than 150 people, worth over $35 million, to vaults that had held seed phrases. The iteration count matters because it sets how fast guesses can be tested. According to the same reporting, a single graphics card would need about a year to crack a password protected by 500 iterations, but about 10 years at 5,000. Experts quoted there advise anyone who kept important passwords in LastPass at the time to change them, and to move crypto holdings to offline hardware wallets. ### Pricing and plan value as researched LastPass has four personal plans. Free stores unlimited passwords but works on one device type only, and includes a 30-day trial of Premium. Premium costs $3.00 a month, billed annually, and adds access on all devices. Families costs $4.00 a month for 6 Premium accounts. Plus costs $7.00 a month, billed annually, and adds LastPass VPN: unlimited use on up to 10 Windows devices, with no data caps according to LastPass, through a separate app that uses your LastPass login. LastPass describes a network of more than 800 servers; its Plus page puts coverage at 100+ locations in 85+ countries. Versions for other platforms are listed as coming soon, so Plus only makes sense today if you use Windows. ### Who should choose LastPass LastPass suits people who want a free plan or a low price: Premium at $3.00 a month and Families at $4.00 for 6 accounts undercut 1Password and Dashlane. Windows users who also want a VPN can get both in Plus, and businesses get new tools for monitoring SaaS and AI use across their staff. Weigh the breach before you choose it. If you had a LastPass account before 2023, the vault stolen then may have used weak settings, and any passwords stored in it at the time should be treated as exposed. If that history matters more to you than price, the alternatives below take different approaches, such as a Secret Key that is needed alongside your password. ## Verdict LastPass earns its rating on price and features: a free plan, Premium at $3.00 a month, strong certifications and a Windows VPN in Plus. The 2022 breach, and older accounts left on weak encryption settings, keep it below password managers with a cleaner record. ## Alternatives - [1Password](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/1password) (4.7/5): Needs a Secret Key as well as your password to decrypt a vault - [Bitwarden](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/bitwarden) (4.8/5): Open-source code and a free plan on unlimited devices - [Dashlane](https://topratedsoftware.net/reviews/dashlane) (4.5/5): Friends & Family covers 10 people for $8.13 a month ## FAQs **Did TopRatedSoftware test LastPass hands-on?** No. This is an expert-researched review built from the vendor documentation, pricing pages and independent sources listed below, not from our own tests. **What security measures does LastPass implement?** LastPass uses 256-bit AES encryption plus PBKDF2 hashing with SHA-256 salting.
