Which antivirus fits you?

Three questions. Every reason comes from our published reviews.

  1. 1. Do you work in government, defense, critical infrastructure, or a regulated industry, or prefer to avoid Russia-linked software?
  2. 2. What do you want the subscription to cover?
  3. 3. Is the computer older or low on memory?

How to choose between them

Bitdefender suits most home users because of its published lab record and low system impact. Norton 360 is the better choice when a bundled VPN, backup, and identity monitoring matter more than the lowest price. Kaspersky matches top-tier detection, but it cannot be sold to new US customers; elsewhere, it suits buyers who have evaluated the geopolitical context. Rankings reflect published independent evidence, not our own lab tests.

Our verdicts

Best Antivirus Overall

Bitdefender Total Security

Bitdefender combines consistently strong independent lab scores with a low-overhead engine and a layered feature set that covers most home-security needs without requiring technical expertise.

Best Security Bundle

Norton 360

Norton 360 is one of the broadest consumer security bundles, pairing solid malware protection with a full VPN, cloud backup, dark-web monitoring, and optional identity-theft insurance.

Best Lab Scores Outside the US

Kaspersky Premium

Kaspersky delivers lab scores that rival Bitdefender's, but it can no longer be sold to new US customers, and buyers elsewhere must weigh the geopolitical risk disclosure alongside its technical strengths.

Ranked by our review scores: Bitdefender Total Security (4.8), Norton 360 (4.7) and Kaspersky Premium (4.6). Each verdict comes from the product's finished review.

Frequently asked questions

Which antivirus has the best malware detection?

All three have earned AV-Test Top Product designations and AV-Comparatives Advanced+ ratings across multiple evaluation periods. Bitdefender and Kaspersky have the most consistent published records, with Norton close behind. These are lab results under controlled conditions; real-world performance depends on configuration, user behavior, and evolving threats.

Do I need a paid antivirus?

Windows Security (Defender) has improved significantly and provides a baseline. Paid suites add layered ransomware protection, dedicated banking browsers, VPNs, password managers, and identity monitoring. Whether those extras justify the cost depends on your threat exposure and whether you already use standalone tools for those functions.

Will antivirus software slow down my computer?

Published AV-Test and AV-Comparatives performance benchmarks place Bitdefender and Kaspersky among the lightest suites. Norton has a somewhat heavier published footprint, particularly during full scans. Modern suites on reasonably specified hardware are generally unobtrusive during normal use.

Is Kaspersky safe to use?

Kaspersky’s technical product consistently earns top independent lab scores. The concerns raised by some governments relate to the company’s Russian jurisdiction, not to publicly demonstrated technical flaws. Kaspersky has responded with a Global Transparency Initiative. Buyers should read both sides and decide based on their own threat model and risk tolerance.
